Pipe bombs found near north Belfast community centre

Several homes have been evacuated during a bomb alert in north Belfast

SEVERAL homes have been evacuated after pipe bombs were found in north Belfast.

The bombs were found by builders close to a community centre in Churchill Street in the New Lodge at around 1pm today.

Surrounding streets have been cordoned off and people have been evacuated.

Police said a community centre in North Queen Street has been opened for evacuated residents.

Churchill Street, Carlisle Parade and Carlisle Terrace are closed to traffic.

Lepper Street is closed at its junctions with Churchill Street and Dawson Street.

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee has said he is relieved no one was hurt.

"The discovery of these devices has caused serious disruption in the area which has now been sealed off by police with residents and workers evacuated," he said.

"These devices could have endangered residents in the area or the workmen who discovered them.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the police."
