SINN Féin and a Co Tyrone pro-life group have held a meeting ahead of a civil rights commemoration march today.

The party has organised the event between Coalisland and Dungannon to mark the 50th anniversary of the first civil rights march in August 1968.

It is expected to attract both pro-life and pro-abortion campaigners.

Tyrone Pro-Life Network spokeswoman Catherine Sewell said police officers phoned her on Thursday morning and later visited her at her place of work to discuss the march.

She claimed officers then asked her to meet Mid Ulster MP Francie Molloy to discuss the parade.

Mr Molloy last night confirmed that a range of campaign groups are expected to take part in the march.

Ms Sewell said other groups including ‘Catholic Mothers’ will be in attendance.

She said some anti-abortion campaigners who will be there also took part in the original civil rights march 50 years ago.

“The right to be born is our very first right,” she said.

“We want to show people we will fight to the bitter end for the unborn, for everybody to be born."

Ms Sewell added that the event will be peaceful and many people will be praying.

“We have told people to bring Rosary beads, we will be praying,” she said.

Mr Molloy said everyone can attend.

“If they want to join our march that’s okay but they have to then abide with the Sinn Féin stewards,” he said.
