Gas explosion closes Upper Newtownards Road

Upper Newtownards Road in east Belfast has been closed in both directions due to a suspected gas explosion.

It is understood one person has been taken to hospital after the explosion at a newly opened restaurant.

The windows of the business have blown out and glass can be seen on the pavement.

The closure is between Sandown Road and Earlswood Road in Ballyhackamore.

Police have said they are evacuating people from neighbouring properties.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
