A CYCLIST was knocked off his bike before being kicked and punched while on the ground in a "vicious" assault in Belfast city centre.

The victim, aged in his twenties, suffered an injury to his head in the attack, which happened yesterday afternoon near the junction of Waring Street and Victoria Street.

Two men, aged 22 and 28, were later arrested before being charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. They are due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court today.

Police appealed for information about the attack, which was reported just before 2.30pm.

Inspector David McBride said: "This was a vicious assault and I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around this time and saw what happened to contact us.

"I would also appeal to any driver in the area at the time who has a dash cam fitted to their vehicle to check their footage."

He encouraged anyone with information to phone 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
