Fire at former St Patrick's Academy Dungannon was arson

POLICE are treating as arson a fire at a former school in Co Tyrone.

43 firefighters tackled the blaze at the site of the former St Patrick's Academy on Killymeal Road in Dungannon in which a number of portacabins were destroyed.

A PSNI spokesman said "police are treating the incident as arson" and have asked that anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the Killymeal Road area yesterday to contact detectives.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it was alerted at 8.13pm last night and by 2.13am the blaze had been extinguished.

"Five appliances (two from Dungannon, and one from Armagh, Pomeroy and Lurgan) an aerial appliance, two water tankers and a command support vehicle with a total of 43 firefighters were engaged in bringing the incident under control," a spokesman said.
