A couple have escaped injury in a pipe-bomb attack on their Derry home.

A loud bang outside a house in Bann Drive in the Waterside was reported to police at around 11.15pm last night and officers discovered the remnants of a suspected pipe bomb.

A number of homes were evacuated while British Army bomb experts examined the object and confirmed it was a viable pipe bomb.

A man and woman who were in the house at the time were not injured.
