A MOTORCYCLIST who died in a road collision in Co Down has been named as 27-year-old Gary Bernard Hamilton.

Mr Hamilton, from Armagh, was driving a Yamaha motorcycle that is believed to left the Castlewellan Road in Banbridge yesterday morning.

He passed away following the crash, which happened shortly before 10am.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision, who may have dashcam footage or who was travelling on the Castlewellan Road and saw a motorcycle prior to the collision, to contact officers in Lurgan.

The road was closed for a time, but was later reopened.

DUP assembly member Carla Lockhart last night offered her condolences to the family.

"In the days ahead the entire community will be remembering the family of this young man, who was so tragically killed on our roads this morning," she said.

"A family today is mourning as a result of this devastating accident.

"I want to thank our emergency services for their assistance at this accident. Often they are the first people to deal with these horrific incidents.

"I would encourage anyone who has any information to come forward to the PSNI and report it on the non emergency 101 helpline."
