A MAN was taken to hospital with serious injuries yesterday after a crash involving a motorbike and a car towing a trailer on the M2.

Emergency services were alerted at about 2.20pm following the crash near Duncrue Street in Belfast.

The Air Ambulance was called to the scene.

Following assessment and treatment, the man was transferred by road ambulance to the city's Royal Victoria Hospital.

Police closed the M2 southbound at Fortwilliam and diversions were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The crash led to significant delays, with police at one stage warning drivers that traffic remained "extremely heavy, almost at a standstill" and urging them to avoid the M2 if possible.

Meanwhile outside Derry, emergency crews were called after a van crashed into the River Faughan.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon off Clooney Road, a busy dual carriageway.

The Air Ambulance was also tasked to the scene.
