POLICE investigating the murder of a man in north Belfast were last night continuing to question a 21-year-old.

The 30-year-old victim, named locally last night as Robert Jones, was discovered seriously injured close to Parkmount Street and Seaview Close in the Tigers Bay area around 9pm on Thursday.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics but later died in hospital.

A 21-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of murder, was last night still being questioned at Musgrave PSNI station.

Police and forensic officers spent most of yesterday examining the area close to where the victim was found. Officers could be seen searching drains and under vehicles parked nearby.

A floral tribute and soft toy were also attached to a lamp-post along the street accompanied by a card with a tribute to the young man.

It said: "I love you forever and always. Why?".

Relatives and friends have also wrote of their devastation on social media.

A sister said: "Rip little bro, we will get justice for you", while another said: "He will always be remembered... Rip jonsey xx party hard up there we will meet again".

Residents living in the Parkmount Street area yesterday also told of their shock, with many saying they had only learning of the tragedy hours later.

DUP MP Nigel Dodds said it was "shocking" to hear of the man's death.

"This has caused great shock in this settled and close-knit community off North Queen Street," he said.

"I wish to appeal for full co-operation with the police, in what is now a murder investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his man's family and friends at this time of sudden bereavement."

SDLP assembly member Nichola Mallon said she was "shocked and saddened".

"My thoughts and the thoughts of my colleagues are with the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time," she said.

Sinn Féin councillor Mary Ellen Campbell said: "Our thoughts are with the victim’s family today, I’m sure they are heartbroken.

"I would encourage anyone with any information to bring it forward to the PSNI."

Detectives have appealed to anyone who was in the area between 8pm and 9pm on Thursday to contact them.
