A £860,000 funding scheme to help conserve Northern Ireland's historic built heritage has been opened to applications.

The Historic Environment Fund, managed by the Department for Communities (DfC), is focused on conserving historic sites and increasing knowledge and public awareness.

Applications can be made for four areas - heritage repair, heritage regeneration, heritage revival and heritage research.

DfC director of historic environment Iain Greenway described historic monuments and buildings as "a key resource which, in addition to their heritage interest, are an important part of our surroundings; contribute to community pride; and help strengthen our economy, right across Northern Ireland, through tourism".

"Limited Funds are available to support the repair of scheduled monuments and listed buildings, the removal of vegetation from scheduled monuments and to encourage councils to develop maintenance initiatives," he said.

"In addition funds are being invested in research and development projects and in encouraging activity in the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

"I would encourage owners and organisations to apply for available funding before the closing date of August 10."

All work has to be completed within the current financial year.
