Tyrone teenagers face 'sectarian sledging' at hurling contest

A HURLING club in Co Tyrone has claimed its under-14 players were subjected to sectarian abuse by children from a Leinster club at an all-Ireland competition in Westmeath.

Eoghan Ruadh hurling club in Dungannon has made a complaint to the Féile contest committee and the club allegedly involved in the weekend incident.

Tomás Colton, chairman of Eoghan Ruadh, told the Dungannon Herald: "Children as young as 11 and 12 used sectarian sledging including calling our players 'British b*****ds' and saying, 'You are not even Irish, away home you Brits.'

"Sledging should be completely ruled out of Gaelic games but I haven't a clue where children would get those sectarian insults."

Mr Colton, who declined to name the team involved, received many online messages condemning the behaviour after he posted about it on Twitter.

The Féile competitions are all-Ireland club competitions in hurling, football, camogie and handball at under-14 level.

Mr Colton said the Clonkill club from Westmeath were "brilliant hosts" to their team and mentors throughout the weekend.
