The family of a Co Down man who died after he fell off the roof of an apartment block in China have told of how they have been left "absolutely devastated".

Adam Clark, from Newtownards, was living and working in the Hangzhou area of eastern China when the tragic accident happened.

The 24-year-old, who was a student of Psychology, Spanish and Philosophy at the University of Dundee, died on May 4, however his remains have only this week arrived back in Northern Ireland.

A former student at Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI) in Belfast, Mr Clark died just two weeks before he was due home to be best man at his father's wedding.

Speaking to the Irish News, Mr Clark's sister, Beth Mason, said her family had been left "absolutely devastated".

The 27-year-old said her brother, who was a keen surfer, had decided to take a year out of university in 2016 to go travelling.

While in Sri Lanka, the Co Down man met and fell in love with a Russian woman who lived in China and he moved to Hangzhou, around an hour from Shanghai, to be with her, in April 2017.

Mr Clark, whose mother died four years ago, took a job teaching English.

However, on May 4, the couple had just finished hosting a leaving party for a friend when they decided to go up on to the roof of their apartment building, which are commonly used as leisure areas in China.

It was as the couple were talking that Mr Clark lost his footing and fell over the edge of the roof to his death.

Police investigating the incident found the Northern Ireland man's death was an accident and have since closed the case.

"We are absolutely devastated," Ms Mason said.

"Adam was such a big part of our family and our lives and it is the worst news we could have ever imagined.

"He was really friendly and outgoing," she said.

"He was the sort of person who would light up a room."

Mrs Mason also praised the work of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, which helped bring Mr Clark's remains home.

"They were fantastic. They were absolutely amazing. It meant my dad didn't have to go to China, which could have been so traumatic for him, not knowing the language and everything. They have been a godsend".

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held tomorrow at Roselawn Crematorium at 2pm.

The family have asked those attending not to wear "black ties or dark clothes" to reflect Mr Clark's happiness and love of life.
