A CO Down man killed in a car crash was last night described as a "true gentleman who wore his heart on his sleeve".

Gary Lennon (45), from Aughlisnafin near Castlewellan, died after the single-vehicle collision on Thursday night.

His BMW crashed on the Dublin Road near Castlewellan at around 10pm.

Police said no other vehicle was involved and have appealed to anyone travelling along the road at the time, especially those with a dash cam, to contact them.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Lennon, who was understood to be well-known in the Castlewellan area.

One friend wrote on social media: "I will miss you forever Gary, you were a great friend to me and mum and we thought of you as part of the family.

"I'm absolutely gutted to have lost such a great friend.

"A true gentleman who wore his heart on his sleeve. Life will never be the same again."

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard also offered his condolences.

"Knowing the wider Lennon family I’m sure all their hearts are breaking today with this very sad news," he said.

"My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone in south Down are with all the family and friends at this tough time."

SDLP assembly member Colin McGrath said: "I understand that the PSNI are trying to piece together what happened and are appealing for information to help them.

"The times ahead for the family will be difficult but I know the local community will rally round and do all they can to help and support the family."

Requiem Mass for Mr Lennon is to be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Aughlisnafin at 9.30am tomorrow, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a cyclist found dead at the side of a Co Armagh road.

David Helliwell (55), from Tandragee, was discovered lying on the Drumnamether Road in the village at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

It is not known at this stage if he collapsed and died or if he was hit by a vehicle prior to his death.

DUP councillor Gareth Wilson, who knew Mr Helliwell, said the family are unclear about what happened.

"I was speaking to his wife Wendy and they don't know what happened, they are devastated," he said.

"They are all keen cyclists, they love the outdoors.

"It's very difficult for them all. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time."

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who was travelling on the Drumnamether Road around 7.30pm to contact them.
