Unionists in Co Down have welcomed the news that Prince Harry has become Baron of Kilkeel following his marriage at the weekend and have submitted a motion to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council offering an invitation to him and his new wife to "visit our wonderful district".

Councillor David Taylor, Ulster Unionist Group Leader on the council, said it was "great news to see Kilkeel being included in the conferring of titles upon Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by Her Majesty The Queen.

"My mum is from Kilkeel and it is a place I hold very close to my heart," he said.

"I know the people of Mourne will be very proud and are looking forward to welcoming Baron and Baroness Kilkeel to the area in the not too distant future."

He added: "Following on from the news that the Queen has offered recognition to Kilkeel in her conferring of titles upon the new Royal Couple, the Ulster Unionist group have submitted a motion to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council offering an invitation to Baron & Baroness Kilkeel to visit our wonderful district.”

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP MP, also welcomed news of Kilkeel's royal appointment.

Speaking on Twitter, Mr Donaldson said he was "thrilled" that Prince Harry had been bestowed the title.

"The folk in my native Mourne will be over the moon. A truly historic day for Kilkeel."
