A Belfast bar popular with students has insisted it remains "open for business as usual" after a joint police and HM Customs and Revenue search.

PSNI Land Rovers were lined up yesterday afternoon outside the Hatfield Bar on the lower Ormeau Road, at the edge of the student Holylands area.

A police spokesman said officers "carried out a search under the Licensing Order (NI)".

The Hatfield Bar said it had been "part of a multi-agency approach to ensure compliance with NI licensing law provisions" and it had agreed to close to "facilitate a timely and effective process for the PSNI ".

"PSNI officers have informed us that we are one of a number of licensed premises in the city who are being visited," a spokesman said.

"In order to facilitate a timely and effective process for PSNI we agreed to close for a few hours.

"We are now open for business as usual."
