A Co Antrim man whose house was shot at last year has accused the UVF of threatening him.

James Hassin says he was told by police that a loyalist paramilitary group was blaming him for an arson attack and that he could be singled out.

Mr Hassin has been threatened by loyalists in the past and shots were fired at his house last September, including at the bedroom window of three young children who were asleep.

Three men have been charged in relation to the shooting incident.

The recent police warning read: “Police are in receipt of information which suggests that persons linked to loyalist paramilitaries in Larne are of the belief that you were responsible for a recent arson attack.

“As a result of this belief, you may be the subject of some unspecified action.”

The father-of-three said he could do without the "hassle."

“You don’t need a death threat form the UVF over nothing, especially when things had calmed down.”

Mr Hassin said that at the time the arson attack is alleged to have taken place he was attending Antrim PSNI station to sign bail on a threat to kill charge.

Sinn Féin representative Oliver McMullan said: “It’s now time that the leadership come out and state clearly does this move away from criminality include Larne?”

“If so, why is this being allowed to carry on?”

A spokesman for the PSNI said: “We do not discuss the security of individuals and no inference should be drawn from this."
