HUNDREDS of people took part in a community rally in Bangor last night in support of a teenage assault victim whose attack was filmed and posted on social media.

There was widespread shock and revulsion over the level of violence in the video which showed the young woman being beaten on Eisenhower Pier at Bangor marina in Co Down on Friday evening.

The 16-year-old victim suffered severe injuries to her face and head after she was repeatedly kicked and punched and her head was slammed on the ground.

Protesters gathered at the marina last night to express their horror at the attack.

David Chapman, who helped organise the rally, said he did not want the teenage victim to feel isolated.

"Everyone, especially here in Bangor, is standing in solidarity with her and showing support for her," he said.

Alderman Robert Adair, the Mayor of Bangor, said: "It shows the community here in Bangor united in a stand and a stand has been taken here tonight.

"The message from the people of Bangor tonight is one of solidarity with the victim.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and we wish her a speedy recovery."

The rally came as three teenagers appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with the attack.

Cora Campbell, (18) from English Street, Downpatrick, a 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before a judge at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court.

All three were charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 17-year-old was further charged with aiding and abetting grievous bodily harm and assault.

The three, who were remanded in custody, are due to appear in court again next month.
