Hundreds of people gathered in a Belfast park yesterday for a public cannabis smoking event.

Between 300 and 400 people gathered at Botanic Gardens for the 'Botanic Blaze at 4/20', which was advertised on the 'Legalise Cannabis – Northern Ireland' Facebook page.

On the page, a post read: "Lets all just chill out in Botanic gardens this 4/20 and enjoy our own dedicated day".

A number of so-called 4/20 events were taking place at various locations yesterday, including London, where 15,000 people were expected to descend on Hyde Park to demand the drug be decriminalised.

The annual tradition is said to have started in America because April 20 in the US date format reads as 4/20.

There are numerous stories as to the significance of the number however, it is thought is it simply said to be the most popular time of the day to smoke the narcotic.

While police were last night unable to say if any arrests had taken place at Botanic Gardens yesterday, a number of people could be seen being led away by PSNI officers and being spoken to by them.

Ahead of the event, Chief Inspector Gavin Kirkpatrick said: "I would remind anyone attending this event that drug and substance misuse is a policing priority".

"Police advice is very straightforward. Do not take illegal drugs and do not take prescription drugs that have not been prescribed to you.

"Local and specialist police officers will take appropriate action if they detect anyone breaking the law at the event this afternoon".

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were last night in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of a number of drugs offences after police stopped a car on the on Tandragee Road in Newry yesterday.

Detectives also seized £20,000 worth of cannabis.

Police said: "This seizure is yet another example of our commitment to policing the threat posed by drugs".
