A YOUNG man from Co Down who died after he was knocked down in London was "one of life's gentlemen", his former GAA club has said.

Christopher Mackin, from Rostrevor, died following the road accident on Friday night. It is understood he was hit while crossing a road.

Mr Mackin, who was in his twenties, worked for Newry-based company First Derivatives and was a former player with St Bronagh's GAA in Rostrevor.

It is understood his body will be flown back to Ireland with the help of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust following a post-mortem examination in London.

St Bronagh's said Mr Mackin, known as Chrissy, represented the club at underage and senior level.

"Anyone that knew Chrissy will tell of his charismatic and friendly persona. He truly was one of life’s gentlemen," a spokesman said.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Mackin and Cole families as well as Chrissy’s friends and wider family circle."

First Derivatives also paid tribute to Mr Mackin.

“The board, management and staff of First Derivatives offer our sincere condolences to the entire Mackin family, on the passing of our dear friend and colleague Christopher Mackin,” the company wrote on its Facebook page. “May he rest in peace.”

Mr Mackin previously worked at Cloughmór Inn in Rostrevor.

In a message on social media, the business said it was "extremely shocked and saddened" to hear of Mr Mackin's death.

"Christopher was a former colleague of ours and was a highly thought of respected young gentleman who was always going to do well for himself," the message read.

"A very sad day and a great loss to the community."
