A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after a shop in Derry was robbed at knifepoint and a taxi driver was hijacked.

The robber stole cash from the shop on Culmore Road on Saturday night.

He then held a knife to a taxi driver and forced him to take him across the border.

The driver suffered a head wound during the hijacking. He was later treated in hospital.

The hijacker was arrested by gardaí after they found the taxi near Muff in Co Donegal.

Stolen cash was recovered from the taxi.

Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion called on greater protection for taxi drivers.

"No one should be subject to fear, intimidation or assault while going about their business and providing a much-needed service to the community," she said.

"I have been engaging with taxi drivers and taxi companies as part of an initiative to support and develop the night-time economy in the city and it is clear there is concern among drivers, particularly about working at night and, as a result, it is becoming more difficult to recruit more drivers into the industry."

She appealed to anyone with information to contact police.
