A love story starring Liam Neeson is to begin filming in Belfast in the summer.

The Co Antrim actor will appear alongside the Bafta-nominated Lesley Manville in Normal People, based on a script by Belfast playwright Owen McCafferty.

It follows the story of Joan and Tom, who have been married for many years but face the challenge of Joan's diagnosis with breast cancer.

Filming is due to begin in early July on location in Belfast.

Directors Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, whose previous work includes Good Vibrations, said it was a joy to collaborate with Owen McCafferty on his first screenplay.

Normal People, they said, took "an extraordinary look at ordinary love".

"It explores big questions and small moments of human connection with unique wit and warmth and a luminous and unflinching candour. We are thrilled at the prospect of bringing this beautiful, honest and unsentimental story to life with Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville in the starring roles, two of the most remarkable actors working on screen today."

Producer David Holmes added "It took me one year to talk Owen McCafferty into writing Normal People and it took him two months to deliver his stunning first draft.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville as our lead actors and my Canderblinks partners Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn directing this beautifully profound love story."
