A weekend security alert in Derry was declared a hoax.

Residents from Hawthorn Drive were evacuated from their homes after a suspicious object was discovered at around 11.30pm on Saturday. The road was also closed.

Army technical officers examined the object and declared it a hoax, with families allowed to return and the road re-opened to traffic after 7am yesterday.

The PSNI has appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
