THE heartbroken mother of a Newtownabbey boy killed in a hit-and-run incident on holiday in Tenerife has said her son "brought happiness to everyone".

Nine-year-old Carter Carson died in hospital last week after being struck by a car while leaving a shopping centre in the town of Adeje.

The Abbots Cross PS pupil was on holiday with his father and family when the tragedy happened.

His mother Carlene O'Connor (31) said she learned of the tragedy in a phone call on Thursday.

"My world instantly fell apart, to think that my baby boy had gained his angel wings – just as his wee life was really beginning," she told the Belfast Telegraph.

"There are just no words to describe this horrific tragedy."

She added: "Carter was a smart, fun-loving, football-crazy young fellow who brought happiness to everyone.

"He touched the hearts of so many people – everyone loved him.

"I miss him so much."

An online fundraising page to help pay for funeral costs has raised more than £11,000.

Ms O'Connor said she has been overwhelmed by the support.

She said the family did not know when her son's body would be released.

"His dad said he is waiting for a call from the British Consulate to let him know when Carter can be brought home. I just want him home," she said.

Two men were expected to appear in court in Tenerife today to learn if they would face formal charges in connection with the boy's death.

The pair, both from Latvia and residents on the island, were detained at the weekend after the car thought to have been involved was traced to them.
