A MAN found slumped in a vehicle in Co Derry on Friday was shot in the head, police have revealed.

The 22-year-old was found by a passer-by on the remote Carndaisy Road near Moneymore at around 9.50pm on Friday.

Police initially said the man had sustained a "significant head wound".

However, following medical reports, the PSNI revealed that he had been shot once in the head.

The man, who is understood to be from the townland of Newbridge in Co Derry, remained in hospital last night.

It is understood police are searching for at least one person linked to the shooting.

Officers appealed to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity on Carndaisy Road on Friday night, or who has any information, to contact them.

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone said he was alarmed by the shooting.

"It's very worrying that someone has been shot, particularly in these circumstances which are a bit unusual," he said.

"I'm sure this is of deep concern to his family. I know that the health service will be taking care of him and hope that he makes a good recovery. My thoughts go out to his family at this time."
