The threat of an attack by republicans in Britain has been reduced to moderate.

The new threat level, issued by MI5, means that an attack in England, Scotland or Wales by dissident republicans is considered unlikely. It is the second lowest rating possible.

The threat had been raised to substantial in May 2016, although the Home Office did not disclose any reasons for their belief that the threat had increased.

The threat level in Northern Ireland from domestic terror remains severe.

In January of this year, Oglaigh na hEireann, who had been one of the most active dissident groups, declared a ceasefire.

The reduction in threat level is thought to have been shaped by this event and the reduced capability of the remaining dissident organisations.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said: "Despite the change which has been made today, there remains a real and serious threat against the United Kingdom from terrorism".

Ms Rudd said the threat level was set independently of government by security services, who consider "capability, intent and timescale".
