IT has all the hallmarks of a classic sci-fi adventure, but with an added Northern Ireland twist.

A team of comic book enthusiasts from the north are launching a new publication based on one of Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson's later works.

Space Precinct Reloaded draws from the source material provided by the cult 1994 television sci-fi crime drama.

But the team have also squeezed in some nods to their roots – including a space-age re-imagining of an armoured PSNI Land Rover.

Artist Connor Flanagan (36), from Coalisland in Co Tyrone, said working on his first comic has been "stressful but incredibly rewarding".

"Going through school, the Gerry Anderson properties made my childhood. I was very much into all those shows," said Mr Flanagan, who works at Forbidden Planet in Belfast.

"I do count my lucky stars to be able to do something to add to the legacy of what Gerry gave us all. It's a fantastic opportunity and I don't take it for granted."

Writer Chris Thompson (27), from Dundonald, said work on the comic began after he pitched the idea to Anderson Entertainment in late 2016.

"When the original series was on back in 1994 it was very much a stylised version of New York," he said.

"When I was doing this version, I was saying, 'Well I'm from Belfast, and Belfast has a long history of police presence,' so I did want to subtly put in that kind of vibe."

Mr Flanagan described the north's comic book scene as "fantastic" and said hopes the 34-page project will open up more opportunities.

The team will be signing copies of Space Precinct Reloaded today from 1-3pm at Forbidden Planet in Belfast.
