POLICE and the family of a missing Portadown man have thanked the public for their "overwhelming" support after a body was found in a river.

The remains were discovered in the Corcrain area of the Co Armagh town on Saturday.

Police said that while no formal identification had taken place, the family of Norman Prentice (55) had been informed.

PSNI Inspector John Allen said: "A formal identification and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

"However, police are not treating the death as suspicious at this time."

The family of Mr Prentice last month made a public appeal for him to get in touch following his disappearance.

He was reported missing on January 15, but had not been seen for several days before that.

A PSNI spokesman paid tribute to the "immense contribution" of the Community Rescue Service, the dive team, Lough Neagh Rescue, police officers and a locally organised search.

He added: "The family and ourselves would like to thank you for the overwhelming show of public support, sensitivity, and encouragement since January 15."
