THE man believed to have been murdered in east Belfast has been named as Mark Ponisi.

The 53-year-old was found in the living room of a flat on the London Road, near the Ravenhill Road, at around 10am on Saturday after police and paramedics were called to the scene.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim appeared to have suffered injuries to his head and face and a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.

A 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Alliance councillor and chair of the Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership Carole Howard said Mr Ponisi’s death “will have shocked the family and immediate community and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim at this extremely traumatic time for them”.

DUP councillor George Dorrian offered his condolences to the dead man’s family and described his death as “tragic”.
