Former Secretary of State James Brokenshire speaks about illness
Former Secretary of State James Brokenshire has spoken of his health battle after a lesion was found on his lung.
Mr Brokenshire resigned from the cabinet and his role as Secretary of State earlier this month after he was diagnosed with the lung condition.
The former secretary of state, who has since been replaced by Karen Bradley, revealed doctors have told him he will require and operation to remove the lesion and a surrounding portion of his lung.
Mr Brokenshire said he realised something may be wrong after he had and “odd niggle with my lungs that was out of the ordinary that I wasn't happy with”
The politician said he was aware he would be unable to continue in his role after his condition was identified.
“When I was told I was very clear that I could not deal with this while remaining a member of the Government,” he said.
“I couldn't see how I could continue to give the effort and the energy required for front-line politics, particularly given the current challenges in Northern Ireland.
“For me it was obvious what needed to happen.
“I resigned on my 50th birthday, which was not how I imagined the day would go, but I needed to focus on my health and my family.”
