A MAN has appeared in court over an image of a snowman with a rocket launcher on a window in Derry.

The display, which included the message "Wishing you an explosive Christmas", was painted on the office of the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association on Chamberlain Street.

Joseph Patrick Barr (29), of Sackville Court in Derry, faced two charges at the city's magistrates court today.

The first was being concerned or permitting the display of an offensive image showing a snowman with an RPG rocket launcher and the caption on October 26 with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

He was also accused of being concerned or permitting the display of an offensive poster displaying a nude man and a reference to a deceased police officer with intent to provoke a breach of the peace on October 5 last year.

A police officer connected Barr to the charges and in response to a defence solicitor, confirmed that the accused had been stopped and was in possession of a rates bill and a leasing agreement for the premises.

The court was told that the charges would be denied and Barr was released on his own bail to appear again on February 21.
