POLICE are investigating after a man aged in his thirties was found dead yesterday at a house in Newry.

The man, named locally as Mark Leonard, was found in a property in the Old Warrenpoint Road area shortly before 9.30am on Sunday morning.

Detectives and forensic officers attended the scene in the Marshes housing development and the area was cordoned off.

A PSNI spokesman said officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course to determine the cause of death," he said.

Newry councillor David Hyland expressed his sympathies with Mr Leonard's family and friends.

He said that some years ago he had assisted Mr Leonard in seeking a home through the Housing Executive.

The independent councillor said Mr Leonard "kept himself to himself", and that he would have occasionally seen him in the area walking his dog.

"I'm very, very sorry for his family and friends and the people who knew him. It's a very sad day," he said.

"I know the family very well. They are a very well-known family and well-respected family and it's sad that this has happened to them."
