THE reputation of a member of staff at a gym in Derry is "in tatters" after he admitted two charges of voyeurism.

Mario McKinney (40), of Elm Close in the city, was sentenced to 18 months probation, ordered to sign the sex offenders register and told to pay £500 in compensation to his victim.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that the offences happened when a man went to the shower area of the gym on the morning of August 15.

He noticed a clear patch on the frosted glass and saw a pair of shoes in the next cubicle and a mobile phone pressed up against the glass.

He confronted McKinney, who told him he was a member of staff and was taking a picture of the damage to the glass in order to get it repaired.

When his phone was checked there were no photos.

Police were contacted and McKinney maintained that as part of his job he was photographing the damaged shower cubicle.

However, when his phone was examined forensically, two deleted pictures of the man in the shower were found.

McKinney told police it was a "moment of insanity" and he deeply regretted it.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said his client had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and wanted to express his "regret and apologies" to the injured party.

The solicitor said it was "an unsavoury type of incident" and McKinney's "reputation lay in tatters".
