A FIRE broke out in a derelict building in Belfast city centre last night.

Fire crews were fighting the blaze at Exchange Place, in the Cathedral Quarter, late yesterday.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area, due to thick smoke.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said crews were called to the building at 5.24pm.

"There is no risk to the public and we are continuing to investigate at the scene," he said.

Exchange Place is close to North Street Arcade, a 1930s mall which was destroyed by arsonists in 2004.
