Cyclist critical following collision in Co Derry

A CYCLIST last night remained in a critical condition in hospital following a collision with a van in Co Derry.

The crash happened during peak rush-hour yesterday morning close to Maghera, on the main road connecting Derry with Belfast.

The Air Ambulance was among the emergency services called to the scene on the Glenshane Road shortly after 8am. The Ambulance Service said two paramedics and two accident and emergency crews also attended the scene.

The cyclist, aged in his 20s, was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, in a critical condition. Police said the driver of the van was not believed to have been injured.

PSNI Inspector Andrew Archibald last night appealed to anyone who was on the Glenshane Road between 8.10am and 8.30am and may have witnessed the collision to contact police.

Meanwhile, the funeral of an elderly woman who died after a road crash in Co Down is due to take place tomorrow.

Ann Cahill Maher from Bray, Co Wicklow died on Monday from injuries she suffered in a collision on Saturday.

The crash involving a black Seat Leon and a black Nissan Note happened on Scarva Road between Banbridge and Scarva at around 11.30am.

Ms Cahill Maher, a mother-of four who was aged in her 70s, was a rear seat passenger in the Nissan.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, Bray at 10am followed by burial in Glasnevin Cemetery.
