RAIL strikes in the Republic have been suspended while workers are balloted over a new pay recommendation

Workers at Iarnród Éireann have already held two day-long strikes and were due to take further action, including on Tuesday - the day of a crucial World Cup play-off game between the Republic and Denmark.

The strikes have affected rail services across the Republic, as well as cross-border trains.

The Labour Court recommended yesterday afternoon that staff should receive pay increases worth 2.5% per year for the next three years - with the possibility of further increases subject to productivity.

The increases will be payable on 1 December 2017, 2018 and 2019, with the agreement expiring in November 2020.

They will also get a once-off "goodwill" €500 voucher next month.

Minister for Transport Shane Ross welcomed the strike suspension.

"Passengers, workers and the company all need to see this dispute resolved in a realistic, fair and sustainable manner," he said.
