A jury has been unable to reach a verdict in the case of police officer accused of shoplifting from an Asda store.

Linda Totten (50), with an address given as PSNI Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, denies two counts of shoplifting in charges dating back almost four years.

In trial scheduled to last three days but which took more than double that time at Dungannon Crown Court, she maintained her innocence of the allegations of stealing goods from Asda Enniskillen on December 20 and 24 2013.

On the second occasion goods to the value of £156.81 were allegedly stolen, whilst the amount from the first incident remains unknown.

Having deliberated for a total of five hours, the jury in the case - who were told they could deliver a majority verdict of 10-2 or more - indicated they could not agree.

They were discharged and Totten released on continuing bail to return later this month, when she will learn if there is to be a retrial.

Judge Neil Rafferty said if there is to be a retrial, he would like this as soon as possible and preferably before Christmas.
