A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with the murder of Anne O'Neill.

Detectives investigating the killing of the retired nurse in Belfast charged the man late on Tuesday.

They had been granted a further 24 hours on Monday night to question him.

He is to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

A second man, aged 23, was released on police bail pending further enquiries late on Monday.

Ms O'Neill (51) was discovered with head injuries in the garden of her parents' home in Ardmore Avenue in Finaghy early on Saturday.

Residents had heard her desperate pleas for help at around 7am and despite treatment at the scene, she was pronounced dead.

Neighbours spoke of their shock following the mother-of-two's killing in the quiet residential area.

Less than two hours after the discovery of Ms O'Neill, who lived close to her parents in the Drenia area, just off Brooke Drive, police searched a house in the Malone Avenue area of south Belfast and arrested two men.

It was reported that forensic searches were carried out at the property.

No funeral details have yet been released for Ms O'Neill, who has been described by friends and neighbours as a "quiet" woman.
