Man shot in hip as he opened his front door in Newry

A man in his fifties has been shot in the hip as he opened his front door.

It happened shortly after 8.15pm on Tuesday in the Drumgullion area of Newry last night. A car was found alight a short distance away soon after.

Detective Sergeant James Johnston said the victim received injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

"A Grey Peugeot 206 was reported on fire a short distance away in Violet Hill Avenue, just after the shooting occurred. Police are investigating if the vehicle is linked to the incident.

“This was a callous and brazen attack in which the injured party could easily have lost their life and a motive for it remains unclear at present."
