A MAN in his thirties remained critically ill in hospital on Sunday night after he was attacked by a gang of men in Derry.

The man suffered serious head injuries after he was assaulted by several men during a fight on Newmarket Street in the city at around 2am on Sunday.

He remained in a critical condition in Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast late on Sunday.

Newmarket Street was closed on Sunday morning after police launched their investigation.

Detectives have appealed to anyone who was in the Newmarket Street area at the time of the fight to contact them.
