A MAN wanted over the death of Co Armagh teenager Lesley-Anne McCarragher has handed himself in.

Almost three months after he was due in court, Damien Paul McCann (30) of Monaghan Road, Armagh, walked into the city's courthouse yesterday morning and was immediately arrested.

Mr McCann is jointly charged with causing death by dangerous driving and death while uninsured.

The case was not scheduled for mention and co-accused Nathan Finn (18) of Keady Road, Armagh was not present.

Ms McCarragher (19) was jogging along the Monaghan Road when she was hit by a car on April 9 2016.

A European Arrest Warrant for Mr McCann was being finalised by officials in the Republic but he handed himself in before this was completed.

After several hours in the court cells, Mr McCann was brought to the dock yesterday afternoon.

A police inspector told the court officers had called at Mr McCann's home address but his wife refused to tell them where he was. Other family members also would not co-operate.

Mr McCann's lawyer said his client had voluntarily made a statement to police and understood he was only a witness.

"He always believed Mr Finn was driving the car which struck the pedestrian and therefore, it was Mr Finn's case," he said.

"My client made a mistake."

However, the judge refused bail.

"Given his defiance and evasiveness to date, the risk is too great," he said.

Mr McCann and Mr Finn will appear for a formal committal hearing later this month.

Ms McCarragher's family were not present in court but have been informed of Mr McCann's arrest.
