Sally-Anne Jones: Picture of IS recruiter linked to Co Down writer's novel
A frequently reproduced picture of British Islamic State recruiter Sally-Anne Jones has an unusual link to a Co Down writer's debut novel.
The striking image of a woman in a nun's habit, with a gun in one hand and a dog in the other, was first used on the front cover of Colin Bateman's 1995 book Divorcing Jack.
The edited version has Jones's face superimposed on to the nun's body. The picture has been widely shared following Jones' reported death in a drone strike in Syria.
Bateman, from Bangor, told the BBC it was "surreal" to see the image again.
"The image has certainly been taken out of context," he said. "My books do have terrorism in them, but it's treated in a certain way and it's fiction."
"To find it used in a conflict that is factual and true is very weird."
