AN ice sculpture, a portable casino or Ghostbusters-themed transport? An array of quirky ideas for the modern wedding were on display yesterday at the annual Alternative Wedding Fair in Belfast.

Now in its seventh year, the event at the Waterfront Hall attracted more than 100 vendors.

For those seeking a unique venue for their big day, a 19th century schoolhouse at Clandeboyne Lodge or a rustic barn at Orange Tree House were advertised.

Belfast Vintage Buses also offered a trip back in time with 1950s era buses for wedding transport, while the Lagan Boat Company will take stag and hen parties on a party cruise around Belfast Lough.

Since debuting in the smaller Black Box venue with just 30 vendors, the Alternative Wedding Fair now attracts around 2,500 people each year.

Cate Conway, co-founder of the company Quirky Weddings behind the event, said there is growing interest among couples in making their nuptials stand out.

"It's been going really well. When we started, the tide was beginning to turn in terms of what people thought weddings should look like and people really got what we were trying to do," she said.
