North Queen Street in north Belfast has re-opened following  a security alert during which a viable device was found.

A number of homes were evacuated overnight with police and bomb squad officers arriving on the scene at around 3am.

A robot was deployed to investigate an object on the road and officers examined a grey car which had broken windows and been vandalised with white paint.

As a result of the alert, during this morning's rush hour the Westlink was reduced to one lane northbound between Clifton Street and York Street and the Clifton Street onslip was closed.

All roads have now reopened following the alert.

Detective Inspector Paul Rowland, from Musgrave Criminal Investigation Branch, said: "I want to thank local people and the wider community for their patience and understanding throughout the operation, which was necessary to ensure the safety of local residents and those travelling in and around the area.

"I would appeal for anyone with information about this incident, or who saw any unusual activity in the area to contact police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 1514 of 11/09/17. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
