A PENSIONER who died after being struck by a car near his home in Co Down has been described as a "gentleman" who was "full of life".

Geoffrey Cartwright (78) was knocked down as he walked along South Promenade in Newcastle shortly before 11pm on Thursday night.

An 18-year-old man has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit and dangerous driving causing death.

It is understood that Mr Cartwright, who was a great-grandfather, had lived on his own after the death of his wife.

It is believed that he was just a short distance from his home when he was hit by the car.

Originally from England, Mr Cartwright had settled in Newcastle after meeting his wife, who was from the area, and had taught bricklaying in college in Newry.

Sinn Féin councillor Willie Clarke, the deputy chairman of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, said that he had known Mr Cartwright "all his life" and was shocked at the news.

"The local community has been left in shock by this news. Geoff was a gentleman, who was liked by everyone. I have known him all my life and it is truly heartbreaking to comprehend this news.

"He would have gone out on his boat in the harbour, and he took great joy and satisfaction in that. He was full of life and a bit of craic. His family meant everything to him."

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath said: "It is always a tragedy when you lose a loved one in sudden circumstances and I offer my condolences and prayers to the family of Geoffrey at this time.

Alliance councillor Andrew McMurray said: "Local people will be shocked by this sad tragedy, with another life lost needlessly on our roads."
