A young child who died after being struck by a car in Co Armagh has been named locally as Christopher Ward.

The little boy, who is believed to be three years old, was knocked down at Dobson's Way in Bessbrook on Friday morning.

He was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital for treatment but later died of his injuries.

Police have appealed for information about the collision, which happened in a new housing development on the outskirts of the village.

Political representatives described how the community was left in shock by the news.

The tragedy also prompted an outpouring of grief on social media for the young boy and his family, who are understood to be settled Travellers in the area.

One user wrote: "RIP baby Christopher. So, so heart breaking, thoughts with the family", while another said: "Poor wee man, God bless his poor family, may he rest with the angels".

Another added: "That's so sad. Sleeping with the angels, thoughts and prayers for his family."

A cousin of the boy also wrote on Facebook: "RIP to my baby cousin Christopher. May you rest in peace. RIP Christopher, Fly high angel."
