A MOTORCYCLIST is in a serious condition in hospital after a collision with a car in Co Down.

The man, aged in his 40s, was airlifted to hospital in Belfast following the crash, which happened on the northbound lane of the A1 Dublin to Belfast Road outside Newry at around 3pm yesterday.

The collision occurred close to the Old Dublin Road.

Northbound traffic was backed up as far as Dundalk and motorists endured long delays as the A1 was closed for several hours before being reopened.

The southbound lane was also closed briefly to allow the police helicopter to land and take off.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash or who stopped with the motorcyclist to contact officers on 101.
