RORY McIlroy told fans last night he is "looking forward to getting stuck in" as he seeks to defend his Irish Open title.

He was speaking at a sold-out event at Belfast's Waterfront Hall to raise money for his charitable foundation which has donated millions of pounds to children's charities.

On stage with McIlroy was Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and actor James Nesbitt, who hosted the event attended by nearly 3,000 people.

Among the audience was former rugby player Stephen Ferris, while Westlife singer Shane Filan performed at the fundraiser.

Guardiola, who will play in a Pro Am tournament at Portstewart today for the Rory McIlroy Foundation, spoke about his career to date as a player with Barcelona and manager with the Catalan club, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Speaking about his chances in the Irish Open, McIlroy said "I hope I can hit the ground running this year and make the strongest possible defence of my title.

"Portstewart will be a great challenge this week and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in."
