A DUP councillor has resigned after admitting a charge of drink-driving in court.

Trevor Rooston Beatty (63), of Staffordstown Road, Randalstown, was detected driving over the legal limit on June 9 in the Antrim Road area of Newtownabbey.

He appeared in court in Belfast on June 28 where he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his breath and was disqualified for three years and fined £400.

The Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough councillor’s disqualification will be reduced by nine months on completion of a drink-driving course.

The DUP said: “We have received notice of Trevor’s resignation. The party is currently in the process of filling the vacancy.”
