BELSONIC opened at its new venue at Ormeau Park in south Belfast, last night with indie rock band Arcade Fire the headline act on the first night of the massive music festival.

Thousands of music fans descended on the new site to see the Canadian rockers, who were also making their much- anticipated Belfast debut.

Arcade Fire were supported by Brighton rockers The Kooks, who kick-started the festival, which is regarded as one of Belfast’s biggest music events of the summer.

Belsonic is also celebrating its 10th anniversary with a host of international acts taking to the stage across the month of June.

Eight concerts will take place at the new Belfast venue over the next few weeks, including Mancunian outfit The 1975 who will play their biggest Northern Ireland gig to date when they headline the festival on Friday.

Other stand-out names from a something-for-everyone artist list include The Chainsmokers, Jess Glynne and Martin Jensen, who are all set to perform.

In light of recent terror attacks in Manchester and London, organisers have increased security measures at the venue.

Motorists have also been warned to expect delays in the area on concert nights.
