A POLISH road worker has died after he was crushed by a machine in south Armagh.

The accident happened as the man, who was working as a contractor, was laying a new road surface on Bog Road outside Mullaghbawn at around 2pm yesterday.

It is understood the man died after he became trapped under a roller.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating.

The Bog Road remained closed late last night.

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty said the man had a young family in Poland.

"I'd like to extend my thoughts and prayers to him and his family," he said.

"My thoughts are also with his colleagues who saw the incident, the local community, and the emergency services who attended the scene."

Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Larkin said the accident had shocked the community.

“It’s a terrible tragedy and our thoughts go out to his family and colleagues who witnessed it happen,” he said.

He added: “The local people are in shock. They have opened their doors to the workers and have offered them cups of tea.”
